Selling Your House After a Natural Disaster
April 12, 2022
A natural disaster can strike at any time. And they don’t discriminate based on income or race or anything else. We are all susceptible to natural disasters and our homes are at risk of being damaged or destroyed in the process.
Billions of dollars of property are damaged or destroyed each year due to hurricanes, tornados, floods, hail, earthquakes, fire, and more. The financial cost doesn’t reveal the emotional cost inflicted upon the property owners.
When a home is damaged or destroyed, it can take a severe toll on the people who live in those homes. Years of memories are suddenly upended and personal belongings are destroyed. A comfortable life suddenly becomes unrecognizable.
In this video Greg Kurzner and Brent Bagley discuss the human side of natural disasters, as they tour a tornado-ravaged property we recently purchased.
After a disaster damages or destroys a home, the homeowners often find themselves reluctant to return to the house. The emotions can be too painful. The destroyed building and the tainted memories make dealing with what remains of the house extremely difficult.
However, life does go on, and at some point, the house must be dealt with. The challenge is that selling a damaged or destroyed property is extremely difficult. Yes, the homeowner will probably receive a settlement from their insurance company, but the house and land is still theirs, and they will have to decide what to do with it. Rebuild? If the pain is too raw, this just isn’t an option. Sell? Who wants to buy a destroyed house? This is the challenge.
Real estate agents sell houses to homebuyers who want a move-in ready house. Homebuyers are not looking for a fixer-upper property. They want a place to live, now. So, asking a real estate agent to sell a damaged or destroyed house is a difficult request

Today we’re going to talk about natural disasters, not only the property damage that they cause, but also the emotional damage that they cause their occupants and homeowners. I’m Greg Kurzner.
Brent Bagley
And I’m Brent Bagley.
Greg
And we’re with Resideum. So, if you pan over our shoulder, you can see the house behind us. We’re using this as a backdrop. And this is the latest home that we’ve purchased. It was hit by an EF 4 tornado where they had winds of 166 to 200 mph. Now, there’s amazing property damage, but what we don’t know is the emotional damage that that event caused to the people living in the home.
Greg
Oh, my. And Brent, this is after we’ve had our first four loads of trash removed, right?
Brent
Yes.
Greg
This is pretty substantial. I think when a lot of people see this, there’s an emotional response that they have to it. I think a lot of people, even if they’ve never been through a tornado or another natural disaster that’s similar can put themselves in what these homeowners must have been going through when this was happening. And it must have been just terrifying beyond belief. So it’s not uncommon when natural disasters happen that people who have these homes don’t want to come back to them. They don’t want to fix them. They don’t even want to think about what happened here. They’ve lost, sometimes loved ones, sometimes they’ve lost all the memorabilia and the things that are important to them growing up in the house or having their children raised in this house. For something like this, for us to be able to come in and completely renovate this house to being basically a brand new house, we think is going to be one of the best add-values and one of the most long lasting legacies that we can do in the professional home buyer business.
Brent
So now we’re standing at the house actually next door to the one that we purchased. As you can see at this house, the immense amount of personal belongings that are still here, it’s like they never came back after the tornado hit.
Greg
They didn’t obviously come back to clean. And look, they’ve got a whole bunch of toilet paper over here.
Brent
I know there’s more right there.
Greg
It’s also kind of what we were saying, which is that, I mean, can you imagine going through this event if you were in this house? Would you want to come back? I think I would be, like, shell shocked.
Brent
I’d be scarred. The memories of the tornado hitting would just be flashing through my mind the whole time I’m out here.
Greg
That’s right. So, again, if you are dealing with the emotional scars of a natural disaster like this, and then you’ve got to come in and deal with fixing it, dealing with the insurance company, dealing with rebuilding it, going through all of this disaster to look for your personal belongings, your photos, your kids’ blankets, things that are important to you. Some people, it’s just too much. I think a lot of people would say that.
Brent
Yeah.
Greg
And so this house doesn’t look like It’s been touched since the day the tornado struck.
Brent
No, we’re talking about a tornado, but you got to think about all the other natural disasters, the hurricanes. I mean, tropical storms were in Georgia, so we don’t get a lot of that. But we do get tropical storms and we get storms that have spun off of that. Lightning, hail, volcanoes. We have volcanoes, invasions by aliens, earthquakes. Yeah.
Greg
So there’s all kinds. Floods. Floods actually could happen.
Brent
Yes, they do.
Greg
Now, I’ve seen floods happen from leaky pipes when people are on vacation or from rivers or streams that just kind of come up on flash flood and flood everywhere, and they do immense devastation. So when you have to kind of go after the aftermath of that, It’s a lot to handle. And emotionally, It can be devastating, especially if somebody perhaps, God forbid, Is injured or killed in that.
Brent
Yes.
Greg
So it leaves a lot of homeowners with sort of “I don’t want to deal with this. I just want this to be gone. I want to move on with my life.” But they have a real estate asset. They have a piece of property that has to be dealt with. And so for them, Resideum, I think, is a really good option because we are not afraid of something like this. And we’re happy to come in and offer them a solution: A cash, quick deal that they can get the value out of their home and they can move on with their lives where they don’t have to come in and deal not only with the physical and the business parts of this, but the emotional thing.
Brent
Yeah.
Brent
And many times, it’s just too much for people. So whether it’s an alien invasion, like you said, or a tornado or tsunami or something like that, people that are subjected to this or even something maybe not quite so dramatic. A tree falls and damages the house. Those are options for them to just sort of deal with the insurance, sell the house as-is to a professional buyer like us. We’ll come in and we’ll put this back together like Humpty Dumpty and they can move on with their lives and maybe in years to come drive by and see a brand new, shiny house where their old house was and have a better, positive feeling about it. So that’s the purpose of our visit out here today. I’m Greg Kurzner.
Brent
I’m Brent Bagley.
